Insomnia can be a very serious condition. Though it is not a threat to life it can have dramatic consequences for the individuals afflicted. It can result in feelings of intense irritability, anxiety, stress, and forgetfulness. Any one of these symptoms may produce absenteeism from jobs or school; also there have been situations in which insomnia has been an indirect cause of deadly automobile accidents. If you believe that you have insomnia that it can be of great assistance to choose and implement a successful insomnia remedy.

1. It is important to try to keep to the same sleep routine as often as you can. This should involve getting up at the same time each day. Even if you had a late night the day before you still need to attempt to get up at your regular time.

2. Try to go to bed at the same time each night. Your body has natural rhythms and cycles, if you disrupt these it is much harder to maintain a decent sleep pattern. The time that you set yourself for going to bed should be at an hour which will provide you with a minimum of six hours rest. It should not be too early as if you sleep for more than eight hours a night you will not feel fully groggy the next day.

3. If you happen to wake up in the night and then cannot get back to sleep you should get up for a short time until you start to feel tired and sleepy again. During this time you could read a book or do a similar relaxing activity.

4. Do not lie in bed worrying about events that have happened or may occur in the future. This will only increase your insomnia. If there are concerns on your mind then these should be addressed during the day, thinking about them whilst in bed is unlikely to bring you any positive results. If you are the type of person that gets stressed easily then you should consider taking up a practice such as meditation or yoga so as to learn to control the mind and become more relaxed.

5. If you suffer from insomnia then it will not help you if you doze off during the day. This will only result in your body wanting less sleep during the night. If you notice yourself becoming tired in the day then at that moment you should get up and go for a walk or do an activity you enjoy.

6. It is well known that caffeine can inhibit sleep. The problem is that the amount of drinks that we consume that contain caffeine has risen over the past few years. It is best to avoid coffee, teas, and colas after one o’clock in the afternoon as their stimulating effect can be a likely cause of insomnia

7. When in bed do not watch TV, eat food, or play video games. These activities will keep you more alert and also will lessen the psychological effect of the bed being associated with sleep.

8. If natural methods fail to help you with your insomnia then you should consult your GP. There are a number of medications that can be prescribed that will help you to drift off and maintain an undisturbed sleep. These are best used for a short term as they can become addictive.
