Can Exercise Alone Bring About Weight Loss?

by on August 5, 2010

An understanding of fat burning exercise and nutrition are both vital to achieve and sustain permanent weight loss and fat reduction. But does diet or exercise help more to lose weight?? Nutritionists and physiologists did research to find the answer.

Weight Loss Studies

There have only been a few studies to establish whether fat burning nutrition or exercise has a bigger impact on fat burning. The professionals were interested in what results would emerge from the studies.

They compared weight loss results between people who move from the big cities to the suburbs and vice versa. The nutritional intake of both sets of subjects were similar. There was little that was unexpected in the findings.

What the studies revealed

  • within the first year of moving from a city to the suburbs, the participants in the studies gained, on average, 15 pounds
  • within the first six to eight months of moving to a city from the suburbs, the subjects in the studies lost an average of 15 pounds

The main conclusion of the studies was as follows: The subjects living in a city did more walking than the subjects living in the suburbs. The city dwellers in the study tended to walk much more to go to wherever they were going, while people living in the suburbs tended to drive. This was responsible for the weight change.

An expert in the field of Applied Physiology and Nutrition has said that fat burning exercise has a bigger impact on fat loss and permanent weight loss than nutrition. To give you an idea of how diet and exercise each affect weight loss, it has been said that it is 65% – 35% in favor of exercise.

Most experts agree that, in a perfect world, you would do a recommended fat burning exercise routine as well as addressing your nutrition, if you want to burn fat and achieve a permanent weight reduction. However we are imperfect, as is the world around us.

How can you use the results of these studies?

Can you burn fat and lose weight permanently if:

  • you follow the right exercise routine, but do not change your diet?
  • you follow a good weight loss diet, but dont exercise at all?
  • you partially follow the exercise and nutrition advice?
